In January 2026, Barr Beacon SCITT became one of the very first School Centred Initial Teacher Training providers to have an Ofsted inspection under the rigorous new framework. The report, which has now been published, highlights the extent to which leaders prioritise the individual trainee experience. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the report describes a “highly inclusive, nurturing provider culture” where trainees are treated as individuals.

Inspectors rated the provider’s work in Inclusion and Professional behaviours, personal development and wellbeing as a Strong Standard across both primary and secondary phases. Key takeaways from the report include leaders providing “highly tailored and responsive support,” making adjustments to meet specific trainee needs. Trainees told inspectors that they feel “at ease” to disclose personal or medical concerns, knowing that staff will respond promptly and without judgement. The Barr Beacon SCITT programme includes a dedicated “wellbeing service and menu,” with mentor meetings that have wellbeing “threaded throughout”. Both former and current trainees told inspectors they found their teacher training with Barr Beacon SCITT to be “caring, inclusive and supportive”.

The inspection also found that Barr Beacon SCITT meets the Expected Standard for its curriculum and leadership, effectively preparing trainees for the “realities of classroom practice”. The curriculum is designed to break down teaching skills into “logical, coherent steps”. Theoretical learning is “purposefully integrated” with school placements, allowing trainees to observe experts before delivering their own sessions. Many trainees secure teaching positions within partnership schools, which Ofsted notes reflects “school leaders’ confidence in trainees’ readiness”.

The report concludes that Barr Beacon SCITT turns out “reflective, resilient professionals”. By the end of the programme, trainees report feeling “confident and well prepared” to manage classrooms, keep pupils safe, and contribute to their local school communities.

Michael Eszrenyi, SCITT Director, said: “I am immensely proud of the work the BBSCITT team and partnership does to ensure that all our trainees achieve, thrive and belong. Ofsted have once-again highlighted that our trainees benefit from high quality training, targeted support and rich placement experiences which enable us to secure excellent outcomes and develop reflective and resilient Early Career Teachers. The report is a testament to the collective ambition and endeavour of everyone at BBSCITT.”

Lynsey Draycott, CEO of Matrix Academy Trust, to which Barr Beacon SCITT belongs, said: “It has never been more important to get training right for teachers. The education system faces significant challenges and changes in the coming years and our programme is very intentionally designed to make our trainees reflective practitioners who can give young people the best possible experience of school.”
