On 27th January, 27 Sixth Form students from Matrix Academy Trust embarked on an unforgettable international expedition to South Africa, travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a once-in-a-lifetime educational and cultural journey.
The adventure began with an evening and early morning safari in Kruger National Park, where students experienced Africa’s wildlife firsthand, spotting elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, wildebeest and even lions in their natural environment.
Students then spent a week volunteering at the Vervet Monkey Foundation, supporting the rehabilitation of rescued monkeys destined for future release into protected forest habitats. Working alongside international volunteers, students took part in animal care, behaviour monitoring and sanctuary maintenance, while also learning about primate conservation and rescue work. Living in rustic conditions encouraged resilience, teamwork and independence, with students showing remarkable personal growth throughout their stay.
Following this, the group travelled to Oudtshoorn to visit partner school Dysseldorps Secondary School, recognised by South Africa’s Department for Basic Education. Students worked together on STEM projects exploring shared environmental and social challenges, contributing to a documentary focused on global education partnerships. Highlights also included feeding orphaned elephants, an ostrich safari and exploring the famous Cango Caves.
The final stage of the trip took students to Cape Town, where they visited Robben Island, led by a former political prisoner, deepening their understanding of Apartheid and South Africa’s history. Cultural experiences included exploring the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, visiting local markets and enjoying traditional South African cuisine and music.
The expedition concluded with breathtaking views from Table Mountain, a scenic drive along Chapman’s Peak to the Cape of Good Hope, and a visit to see African penguins before watching the sunset over Cape Town’s harbour.
This transformational experience enabled students to develop global awareness, cultural understanding and confidence, creating memories and learning opportunities that will stay with them for life.
