Matrix Academy Trust Staff Conquer the Three Peaks Challenge
The Three Peaks Challenge is one of the UK’s toughest endurance events—climbing the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike), and Wales (Snowdon) within 24 hours, including the driving time in between. The challenge involves a total walking distance of 23 miles (37km), 3,064 metres (10,052ft) of ascent, and a 1000-mile drive across the country. Last week, 59 members from across Matrix Academy Trust took part, united in purpose, spirit, and resilience, to raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, our Trust Charity of the Year.
On Friday 23rd, our dedicated staff set off on this gruelling journey—ready to tackle not only mountains, but everything else the challenge could throw at us. And throw it did! The trip began with a set of lost keys on the way to Scotland, followed by a minibus battery failure, and then a series of relentless challenges: bad weather, snow on the summit of Ben Nevis, and a dangerously slippery descent on Scafell Pike. Through it all, our teams displayed unwavering determination, teamwork, humour, and courage.
We’re incredibly proud to announce that, through this challenge, the Matrix Academy Trust community has now raised over £25,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This incredible amount will go toward supporting life-saving care, equipment, and services for children and their families. The generosity and encouragement from our schools, families, and supporters has been truly overwhelming—and we thank everyone who donated or cheered us on.
This was more than just a physical test—it was a powerful demonstration of the values we promote across our Trust: resilience, teamwork, and belief. Although the challenge was logistically complex and physically exhausting, every step taken reflected the strength and unity of the Matrix family.
Our incredible support drivers deserve huge thanks. Their driving, motivation, and care kept us going through the darkest (and coldest) hours. Without them, this feat would not have been possible.
Ben Nevis – 1,345m | Distance: 17km
We began in the Scottish Highlands, setting off at 6:30am in staggered waves. Although not a race, it was inspiring to see our teams charging up the slopes with real purpose. The snow-covered summit was a surreal and stunning sight. The terrain varied from smooth trails to punishing rock, testing every muscle. Despite the cold our teams made excellent time.
- UK Average Time: 7–8 hours
- Matrix Average Team Time: 4 hours, 57 minutes
Scafell Pike – 978m | Distance: 9.4km
After battling traffic, we began our second climb close to 8pm, just beating the deadline for safe access. But the conditions quickly turned: steep inclines, freezing rain, fading light, and eventually, full darkness. The descent was treacherous, with slippery rock and harsh declines demanding every ounce of concentration and teamwork. Despite the physical and mental toll, we powered through.
- UK Average Time: 5–6 hours
- Matrix Team Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes
Snowdon – 1,085m | Distance: 13km
By the early hours, we knew the 24-hour target had slipped from our grasp—thanks to unforeseen events and inevitable delays. But the challenge was never just about the clock. So, at 6am, with damp gear, aching legs, and little sleep, our team took on the final climb. Snowdon’s paths were unforgiving, but we were fuelled by determination and the spirit of teamwork. As the sun rose and all teams rejoined together for the final stretch, it became an emotional, unforgettable ascent.
- UK Average Time: 6–7 hours
- Matrix Team Time: 3 hours, 12 minutes
With cheers, hugs, medals, and more than a few tears, the challenge came to a close. We had climbed three countries’ highest peaks, pushed our limits, overcome the unexpected—and achieved it together.
A massive thank you goes out to our support crew, organisers, and every individual from across the Trust who took part. Together, we’ve not only raised vital funds for a brilliant cause, but also created memories that will last a lifetime.
